Assignment 2 Blog 1.
The article " The Role of Highways in America's Poverty", examines the displacement of African Americans in Pittsburg. This displacement was caused by the construction of highways. At that time, roads were highly congested, and city planners saw African American communities as an obstacle, so they removed them. Some possible ways to make amends are to name the highway after the African American community, allow for more accessibility within the highways for previously displaced African American families, and allow for cheaper rent for the displaced.
I think it's interesting with how you said "city planners saw African American communities as an obstacle" which is a strong and attention capturing statement that could be expanded.
ReplyDeleteI also wrote about the effects of the freeways built through American cities. I think there is a lot to expand upon here and I don't think simply naming the highway after the former community would be of much help.
